Each year, starting in 2009, I have led a student-organized research trip to Central and Eastern Europe during January intersession funded by a grant from the European Union’s DG for External Affairs (link to European Union Centers of Excellence site) through the Center for Transatlantic Relations (link) at Johns Hopkins University. Additional funding is provided by the Hirsch endowment at SAIS. This trip offers students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Central and East European political economy through interviews with top leaders in government, business, and non-governmental organizations. In 2009, we travelled to Romania and Bulgaria and completed a report on the EU’s fight against corruption in these countries. In 2010, we traveled to Ukraine and Latvia to analyze different responses to the global financial crisis in these countries.
